Here's another question for you: If you had to introduce someone to podcasts, audiobooks or pod fic for the first time, what would you recommend they start with to appreciate the medium?

I guess it would depend on what they're into?

Children's fiction: Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi, read by Bronson Pinchot, is so good that I still think about it - specifically, the audiobook - 10 years later. I did something I'd never done and looked up the narrator for more of his work.

YA fiction: The audiobook adaptation of Nimona by N.D. Stevenson is really cool because it's more like a radioplay than a traditional audiobook.

Internet weirdos: The Behind the Bastards 4-part series about the Zizians and 2-part series about Christine Chan are the things I'm always recommending to my friends (with some caveats; iirc, during the Zizians series, the host had a weird bit about a Most Dangerous Game-style cannibal island? which I did not enjoy).

I feel like I'm a newbie at this but you know what got me into podfic? Someone in a server saying they couldn't find people with a blanket permission for podifc and other works and I said "what's podfic" and they said "oh let me introduce you to this" and they sent me a multivoice podifc of Star Trek that was incredible to listen to. I can't remember the name but I was suddenly curious so I decided to add a blanket permission to my profile.

Two weeks later, someone had podficced one of my works and that was it. I was in love.

So I guess my rec for someone just getting into podcasts or podfic for the first time would be: find something you already like and listen to it. Perhaps listen while reading if you don't have the attention span to just listen. But give that 5-minute podfic of your favorite ship a chance and see if it clicks.

Also, reccing this wonderful short pod by peasina memory of water that was one of the first podfics I listened to and got me absolutely hooked.

This is such a great question.

Podcasts- S-Town, such a classic.

Audiobooks- I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are by Rachel Bloom or You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost): A Memoir by Felicia Day. I think memoirs read/written by performers are top tier.

Podfic- Lunchee, RevolutionaryJo, Paraka. They've all been in the game forever and they all do extraordinary work.

Oo hm, what a good question. For audiobooks, if I knew they'd be into the story itself, I'd absolutely suggest The Night Circus as a place to start. I really enjoyed it and find the whole thing such a comfort listen.

Here via a post by [personal profile] thatjustwontbreak: I have yet to listen to podfic, and the only podcasts I listened to were Firefly ones way back in the day, but for audiobooks I quite liked Kevin R. Free's narration on The Murderbot Diaries. I've only listened to... the first 2 or 3, I think? I tried reading an ebook of the next one in the series, but I keep losing interest so I really think I want that excellent narration again.
