In a small town in upstate New York, Harper lives a completely mundane existence. After years trying to get an artistic career off the ground, she’s retreated to her tiny hometown, working minimum wage jobs and trying to ignore her chronic pain. All her days are exactly the same–wake up, have a cup of instant coffee, go to work, go home, have a microwave meal, watch TV, go to sleep. With the exception of her girlfriend–the one bright spot in Harper’s life–existence is tedious and never-ending.

And then, on her thirty-sixth birthday, a demon possesses Harper. So. Not so mundane after all.

TWO THOUSAND AND LATE is the story of a demon from hell sent to bring along the apocalypse. Only, when they arrive, they find that the end of the world isn’t as straightforward as they thought. But that doesn’t mean they can’t still sow a little chaos–the human they were assigned to is incredibly ordinary, but has more rock bottom to find.

This podcast is a riot. It's full of peak millennial humour and post-capitalist feels in the vein of Bubble. It's satire in the most blunt in-your-face way, but in a good way? Heaps of fun. The ending of Episode 5 is the most fun I've had with a podcast in ages. I don't want to say too much more and spoil the story, but this is definitely a recommend if you like dark humour and wild rides.

The audio is very fast though, especially Havoc. For the first time I've used the speed controls in my podcast player and that was to slow the episodes down.

Dead Belt: True Tales of the Gasping Frontier is a space-folk horror anthology podcast of strange happenings on the fringe of settled space. Close encounters, weird happenings, narrow escapes, and lonesome deaths far beyond the stars we know. Drawing on old mariner's tales from the oceans of Earth, filk tradition, and the superstition and ghost stories of the American West, Dead Belt is written for those that know that when we push out among the darkness between the stars, sometimes it pushes right on back.

Dead Belt is inspired by the tabletop RPG of the same name by A Couple of Drakes.

I cannot recommend this podcast enough. The worldbuilding and production values are top tier, and it boggles the mind that it's a one-person passion project. The host's delivery is also perfect, in a southern twang with a heavy gilding of vocal fry, and peppered with belter slang that works perfectly.

The horror is pretty light, there's no real gore or jump scares. It's more the horror of surviving in an environment that absolutely wasn't made for you, whether that's the rim of a black hole or a post-capitalist hellscape where you have to pay for own air.

Even if you're not a fan of the setting I would strongly recommend the first episode, which is a poem about surviving in this world. One of the best podcast episodes I've ever heard, in any feed.

Sadly, the feed has done dark the last 6 months. Hopefully the host 'ole Chariot is just taking a breather.

To kick off Fic Feb I'm going to recc The Audio Drama Directory. Don't be put off by the opening text that say it's in early stages, the Directory has over 3000 audio dramas listed. It added 1200 last year alone and here's the proof:

It also lists a bunch of real plays and tags them by game so if you're super into Shadowrun or Blades in the Dark, or some game called Dungeon and Dragons, it's a real gem.

I like that it has a Bluesky, Tumblr and Mastadon feeds that showcase all new additions.

If the firehose of The Audio Drama Directory - it posts multiple new podcasts a day - is too much why not check out the Podcast Audio Graph. It compiles 'also listened to' data from Apple Podcasts and can generate a 3D interactive map of related podcasts for any title it recognises. You can then scroll around that map like you're a 90s hacker in the Bad Guy's mainframe.

Plug in your favourite podcast and see if you can find a new show to explore.

I don't know about you, but any time I hear something about the real world lately I start looking for the unsubscribe button. So let's embrace some worlds less horrible, or at least horrible in different ways.

From 1 February to 28 February I challenge [community profile] voiceinmyear members to post something fictional to the community: a post about an audio drama, anthology series, audiobook or podfic.

You can recommend, rant, revile, I don't matter what you say about the fic. Just post something distracting that we can escape to during a polar vortex/firestorm/collapse of modern civilization.

If it helps you can use the following template:
